How It All Started
Meet the Founder: Joshua Chacon
Hello, my name is Joshua Chacon. My story goes back to the early 80s when I was growing up in a really poor neighborhood where we did not talk much about safety and we did not know any better. Nobody kept their dogs on a leash. There were no rules, and every kid walked to school even in the freezing cold.
I remember walking to school from the first grade all the way to my senior year of high school. It was an 11 blocks up and back. We always had our pockets full of rocks because it seemed that every street had at least one aggressive dog waiting for you.
Walking home was completely different because that is when the bullies came out. These were not kids our age. They were sixth graders to eight graders and in high school their were a bunch of weirdo’s in cars trying to give students a ride in their vehicles. In grade school these older bullies always seemed to look for someone smaller to pick on. They picked on me, and they picked on my friends on a regular basis.
Looking back now I probably could have beaten them up hahaha just kidding. I realize how much of a difference it would have made if we had even a key chain pepper spray for the dogs or a simple personal alarm could have helped us stay safe by grabbing the attention of an adult nearby. It would have leveled the playing field during times when we really needed it.
Those early experiences shaped the foundation of our business today. I find happiness every time I am able to put a self defense tool in someone’s hand to keep them safe. I see myself in them. On how I wish I had a way to walk home safe from school.
Growing up, I learned early that there are people willing to pull a fast one on you or pick on someone who looks like an easy target. I saw people being bullied or jumped because of their smaller size or because they were female. It never sat right with me. I have always believed that everyone deserves a fair chance to protect themselves, and that belief is what eventually shaped this business.
When I was a kid on Halloween, a World War II veteran handed me and my friend two large cans of pepper sprays because he had run out of candy. He told us that if we were ever outnumbered, we should spray it in their face and run. Months later, that same pepper spray helped one of my friends escape a situation where he was badly outmatched by a grown man who was almost thirty while my friend was only seventeen. That moment showed me how a mall tool can make a big difference when it really counts.
As more people asked me about self-defense products, the idea grew. Over time, it became clear that many regular people wanted simple, reliable tools that could help them feel safer at home, at work, while walking, while jogging, or while traveling. That idea turned into Self Defense Products LLC, a family-owned business built on everyday protection for everyday people.
Decades of Non-Lethal Self-Defense Experience
I have been involved in the non-lethal self-defense industry since the early nineties, long before websites and online shopping were part of everyday life. In 2008, I began sharing these products in the community with flyers and small samples, meeting people face-to-face and helping them understand their options.
Over the years I have visited residential neighborhoods, local bars and nightclubs, flea markets, home gatherings, schools, security teams, and martial arts dojos. What I learned along the way is that most people simply want something that can help them feel safe in their day-to-day routine without resorting to anything lethal.
Background in Crisis & Community Support
Before running this business full-time, I worked as a counselor supporting victims of domestic violence, survivors of sexual assault, high-crisis intervention cases, and members of the homeless population. I saw firsthand how vulnerable people can become when they feel unprepared or unsupported.
I also spent time working with women’s shelters and campus safety groups. Those experiences taught me how important confidence and preparedness can be, especially for people who feel vulnerable or unsure of what to do in difficult moments. My goal has always remained the same: make safety simple, affordable, and accessible, and make sure people have the right tools for peace of mind.
