Self Defense Products LLC is an online store for pepper spray, stun guns, personal alarms, diversion safes, safety tools, and other self defense products.
We also provide simple safety information, product guidance, and legal resources to help people make better choices.
Our focus is simple. Give people practical information without exaggerated promises or fear based selling.
How It All Started
It all started long before Self Defense Products LLC existed. When I was younger, I already had a strong interest in martial arts, self defense, and ninja style gear.
I had throwing stars, throwing knives, a ninja mask, and even a homemade grappling hook that my uncle made for me. I did not have a real ninja outfit. I wore black sweats with a white pinstripe and white tennis shoes, so I was basically a generic ninja.
In the photo, I had even wrapped the stick with black electrical tape for the element of surprise. Looking back, I think the white pinstripe on my sweats and the white tennis shoes probably gave me away anyway.
I also used to pose next to trees at night because I thought I could blend in with them.
I spent a lot of time looking through karate magazines at Safeway and checking out Tai Chi and martial arts books from the library. I studied the pictures, practiced different stances, and learned what I could on my own.
Kung Fu Theater on Sundays was also a big part of it. I wanted to take karate, but it was too expensive for me at the time, so I mostly learned by reading, watching, and practicing on my own.
The Halloween Pepper Spray Story
Years later, one Halloween night, my next door neighbor and I were out trick or treating. It was about 10:30 at night when an older World War II veteran answered the door.
He asked us, “Isn’t it too late to be trick or treating?”
We looked at each other and kind of shrugged our shoulders.
He said he did not know if he had any candy left and told us to come in while he checked. Before we knew it, we were sitting in his living room talking with him and shooting the breeze.
We stayed there for a long time.
It was around a quarter to midnight when we were getting ready to leave. He told us he did not have any candy left, but he had something else he could give us.
He went into another room and came back with two cans of pepper spray.
He told us, “This is pepper spray.”
I asked him what it was.
He said, “If you’re ever outnumbered, just spray this in their face and take off running.”
Those were his words.
We thanked him, told him Happy Halloween, and left.
When I Saw What Pepper Spray Could Do
Sometime after that, a different friend called me and asked if I wanted to go cruising. He told me to bring my candy, so I brought the bag I still had from Halloween.
The pepper spray was still in that bag.
When he dropped me off later, I accidentally left the bag of candy in his car. I forgot all about it.
Weeks later, he got into an altercation with someone at a high school basketball game.
To the best of my knowledge, he used that pepper spray.
I happened to be down the hall, so I saw the aftermath. People were coughing and choking from the spray.
I cannot say for certain that it was the same can the older man had given me, but to the best of my knowledge, it was.
That was the first time I got to see firsthand what pepper spray could do in a real situation.
Building the Business One Step at a Time
My self defense business history in Colorado goes back to 2007, when I formed a business called Self Defense and Surveillance.
In 2009, I also started working as an addictions counselor. I worked with rape victims, people dealing with domestic violence, high crisis intervention cases, and people going through detox and homelessness.
At the same time, I kept working on the self defense business.
I often worked second shift. After I got off work, I would go to bars and nightclubs and sell pepper spray, stun guns, batons, and other non lethal self defense products.
On Saturdays and Sundays, I would set up at the flea market.
During the week, after dropping my kids off at school, I would work on my website.
At the time, we had two kids. Now we have three.
There was no big team behind me. It was just me, doing the work one place at a time.
Working With People Who Faced Real Safety Problems
My work as an addictions counselor put me around people dealing with real safety problems.
While working in detox, I sometimes transported people to different locations, including private women’s shelters. Those locations were kept quiet for safety.
Over time, people connected to some of those shelters became familiar with me and knew about the self defense products I was selling.
I was eventually invited to set up a table at one of the women’s shelters. Being invited there was an honor, and it was a great experience for me.
I also sold non lethal self defense products to security guard companies, liquor stores, dispensaries, colleges, salons, and other local businesses.
I remember setting up at a private hair show where a salon owner was promoting her business. I would also drive around, hand out business cards, talk to people, and build relationships wherever I go.
I sold in a lot of different places over the years. Most of it was just me going out, meeting people, and building the business one conversation at a time.
Those experiences taught me that personal safety is different for everybody. What works for one person may not be right for somebody else.
What Self Defense Products LLC Is Today
Over the years, the business changed along with technology and online shopping.
Today, the business operates through Self Defense Tools LLC and uses Self Defense Products LLC as its public facing name.
We focus on practical non lethal self defense and safety products for everyday life, including pepper spray, stun guns, personal alarms, diversion safes, safety lights, and other personal safety tools.
Not every product is right for every person.
Size, carry style, comfort level, experience, and local laws can all affect what makes sense for you.
Why We Provide Safety Guides
We sell self defense products, but I do not believe the product is the most important part of staying safe.
Your mindset comes first.
Street smarts, situational awareness, paying attention to your surroundings, and knowing when to leave a bad situation can matter more than anything you carry.
That is one reason we provide safety guides and current information on this site.
We want people to understand how products work, what their limits are, and what laws may apply where they live or travel.
A self defense product can be a useful tool, but it should never replace good judgment and awareness.
