Animal Defense Sprays

Animal defense sprays are for the moments outdoors when an animal decides you are the problem. A loose dog coming at you on your morning walk. A bear on a trail you have hiked a hundred times. These are made for that.

This is not the same thing as the pepper spray you carry in your purse. Bear spray and dog spray are built different, they carry different, and they get used at different distances. Read the label on whatever you pick so you know what you are holding.

Take a look at what we have below and pick what fits where you spend your time.

Bear spray and dog spray are not the same

People mix these up all the time. Bear spray is made for bear country. It throws a wide cloud at a longer distance because you are not trying to hit a moving target with a stream, you are trying to put a wall between you and the animal.

Dog spray is for the closer stuff. A dog that got out of a yard. A dog off leash on a trail that is not friendly. It sprays tighter and shorter because that is the distance you are dealing with.

If you want the full breakdown, read bear spray vs pepper spray and how bear spray works before you carry either one.

Air horns

You will see air horns in here. A lot of hikers and campers like having something loud, and noise gets attention when nobody is close enough to hear you yell.

Here is the part I want to be straight about. An air horn is not bear spray. Do not carry one and think you are covered in bear country. It makes noise. That is what it does.

Electronic dog trainers

The electronic dog trainer in here is not a spray. It is a training tool for your own dog, and it works how the instructions say it works. It sits in this section because it deals with dogs, not because it is a defense spray. Use it the way the product tells you to use it.

Before you carry any of it

Check the expiration date. Sprays lose their punch sitting in a glove box for three years, and a weak canister is worse than no canister because you think you are covered.

Check the rules where you are going. Laws vary by state and city, and parks and campgrounds have their own rules on top of that. Some places restrict what you can bring in. Know before you go, not at the trailhead.

Read our pepper spray safety guide if you have never carried a spray before.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use bear spray on a dog?

It is made for bears, and the label tells you what it is approved for. Using a product outside what it is made for is on you. If dogs are your concern, carry dog spray.

Can I use regular pepper spray on a bear?

No. Personal pepper spray is made for people at close range. Bear spray is a different product with different range and volume for a reason. Carry the right one for where you are.

Does animal defense spray expire?

Yes. Check the date on the canister and replace it when it is due. Do not carry an expired one and count on it.

Is an air horn enough on its own?

It is a noise tool, not a deterrent you should rely on in bear country. Treat it as an extra, not your plan.

Look through what we have above and pick what fits where you hike, walk, or camp.
