How to Use Bear Spray Safely & Effectively

Knowing how to use bear spray is just as important as carrying it. Here’s what to remember when it counts:

1. Carry it accessibly: Holster it on your chest, belt, or shoulder—not buried in your pack.
2. Practice quick access: Get comfortable pulling it out and removing the safety clip.
3. Aim low and spray: Create a wall between you and the bear, aiming slightly downward.
4. Use short bursts: 1–2 seconds at a time is all you need to create a deterrent cloud.
5. Stay calm and back away: Don’t run. Move away slowly with the spray at the ready.

Bear spray typically reaches up to 30 feet and lasts 5–10 seconds. Always check expiration dates before each trip.
