Inert practice pepper spray lets you practice using a spray can without releasing an OC pepper formula. It uses water and nitrogen to create a training spray for learning how to hold the can, operate the locking actuator, and control the spray pattern.
This is not a self-defense spray. It contains no active pepper formula and should not be carried as a replacement for live pepper spray.
What Is Inert Practice Pepper Spray?
Inert practice pepper spray is a pressurized training product made for practice drills. It gives you a way to learn the basic movements before handling a live OC canister.
Practice can help you learn where to place your finger, how much pressure the actuator needs, and how the spray moves through the air. It can also show you how wind affects a stream or fogger pattern.
Which Practice Spray Should You Choose?
Choose the option that is closest to the size and spray pattern of the live pepper spray you plan to carry. The three available choices serve different training needs.
- 1/2 ounce practice spray: Approximately 6 to 8 bursts, a manufacturer listed range of 6 to 8 feet, and a size of approximately 4 inches by 1 inch.
- 2 ounce stream: Approximately 18 to 20 one second bursts, a manufacturer listed range of 6 to 8 feet, and a size of approximately 4 1/8 inches by 1 3/8 inches.
- 2 ounce fogger: Approximately 18 to 20 one second bursts, a manufacturer listed range of 6 to 8 feet, and a size of approximately 4 1/8 inches by 1 3/8 inches.
Range and burst counts are approximate. Wind, the length of each press, can pressure, and the amount remaining may affect actual performance.
What Can You Practice With It?
You can practice removing the can from where you keep it, placing it in the correct position, working the locking actuator, and directing the spray toward a safe target.
A paper or cardboard target can help you see where the spray lands. Practice can also show you why checking the wind matters before pressing an actuator.
The stream model releases a focused line of liquid. The fogger covers a wider area and may be affected more by moving air. Choose the pattern that matches the live spray you expect to carry.
Where Should You Practice?
Practice outdoors in a clear area where no person or animal is in the spray path. Check the wind before you begin and make sure the liquid will not reach vehicles, doors, windows, or other property.
Do not spray it at yourself or another person. The can does not contain OC, but the nitrogen and pressurized liquid may still irritate skin or eyes.
Wet surfaces may also become slippery. Clean the practice area when you finish and follow every warning printed on the can.
What Are the Important Product Limits?
This training spray cannot protect you during an emergency because it contains no active pepper formula. Keep it separate from any live pepper spray so you do not confuse the two.
The controls and feel may not match every live pepper spray model. Select the closest size and pattern available, then read the label on your live spray to learn how that specific product operates.
How Should You Store It?
Store the can away from children, direct sunlight, flames, and high heat. Do not leave it where it may be crushed, punctured, or pressed by other objects.
Inspect the can before each practice session. Do not use it if it leaks or if the can, nozzle, actuator, or safety becomes damaged.
Is Inert Practice Pepper Spray Right for You?
This training spray may fit someone who owns pepper spray but has never practiced with a pressurized can. It may also help instructors demonstrate basic spray patterns without using an OC formula.
