Can You Bring a Stun Gun on a Plane?

You cannot bring a stun gun on a plane in your carry on bag. TSA prohibits stun guns, TASER devices, and other shocking devices from the aircraft cabin. A stun gun may be permitted in checked baggage when it is packed so it cannot accidentally activate.

Carry On Rules for a Stun Gun on a Plane

TSA does not allow stun guns, TASER devices, or other shocking devices in carry on baggage. This applies even when the device looks like a flashlight, cell phone, keychain, or another everyday item. TSA looks at what the device does, not what it resembles.

Taking one through the passenger security checkpoint can lead to delays, additional screening, loss of the device, and possible civil penalties. Leave it out of your carry on bag completely.

Checked Baggage Rules for a Stun Gun on a Plane

TSA lists stun guns and shocking devices as permitted in checked baggage with special instructions. The device must be packed in a way that makes it inoperable from accidental discharge. Check the official TSA stun gun guidance before packing because rules can change.

TSA does not require every stun gun battery to be removed. Battery rules depend on the type of battery and whether it is installed in the device. An installed lithium battery may remain in a checked device when the device is completely powered off and protected from accidental activation and damage. Spare or removed lithium batteries cannot go in checked baggage. They must be protected from short circuits and carried in the aircraft cabin. The FAA battery guidance explains these requirements.

Your airline may have rules that are stricter than TSA requirements. Contact the airline before your flight and tell them the exact type of device and battery you plan to pack. Do not assume that a TSA allowance means every airline will accept it.

Check the Laws Where You Are Going

Getting an item through airport screening does not make it legal to own or carry at your destination. Stun gun laws vary by state, city, and country. Some locations place restrictions on possession, carrying, age, permits, or where the device may be taken.

Check the current laws at your destination before packing anything. Our Stun Gun Laws by State guide can help you begin your research, but you should still confirm the current state and local rules.

Other Personal Safety Tools for Travel

Pepper spray follows separate TSA and airline rules. It is also prohibited in carry on baggage. TSA may permit one qualifying container in checked baggage, but many airlines prohibit pepper spray completely. Our Can You Take Pepper Spray on a Plane guide explains those requirements.

If you plan to carry a stun gun after reaching your destination, our Travel Taser guide discusses compact choices for travel. Our Travel Safety Tools guide also covers practical options for hotels and vacation rentals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a stun gun in checked baggage?

TSA permits stun guns and shocking devices in checked baggage when they are packed so they cannot accidentally discharge. Battery requirements and airline restrictions still apply.

Does the battery have to be removed?

Not always. An installed lithium battery may remain in a checked device if the device is completely powered off and protected from activation and damage. Spare or removed lithium batteries must be carried in the cabin with their terminals protected.

Can my airline refuse to transport a stun gun?

Yes. An airline may have restrictions that are stricter than TSA rules. Check with your airline before packing the device.

Do the same rules apply to disguised stun guns?

Yes. A stun gun shaped like a flashlight, cell phone, keychain, or another item is still prohibited in carry on baggage. Its checked baggage packaging must prevent accidental discharge.

Does clearing TSA mean the stun gun is legal at my destination?

No. TSA rules cover transportation security, not state, local, or international possession laws. Check the laws at your destination before traveling.

This is general travel information, not legal advice. TSA, FAA, airline, state, local, and international rules can change. Confirm the current requirements for your device, battery, airline, and destination before flying.
